Further Information – What is The Talking Shop?

The Talking Shop© is a Culture and Democracy Information Centre.  All Talking Shops will contain The Democracy Box. The Talking Shop encourages and facilitates public engagement with creativity, arts and culture, and democratic systems and structures.

The Talking Shop is a space for the public and creatives to collide, converse, connect, collude and create. It is a public R&D space which encourages and promotes cultural and democratic participation.

A space in which to articulate, champion and strengthen the role of the creativity and democracy in society and empower through a sharing of information and knowledge.

The Talking Shop is a physical ‘what’s on’ hub which everyone helps curate. It is a public space which explores the intersection between cultural and democratic participation. A shop which sells nothing and where talk is rich and never cheap. A space with information, creation and conversation at its core.

#EveryonesInvited #OneConversationAtATime

What is a Talking Shop Host?

The Talking Shop cannot work without the Talking Shop hosts. They are the key ingredient. The host is an official welcomer.  A meeter and greeter. A facilitator for the conversations which take place inside. Someone who ‘holds’ the space and keeps it and every visitor safe. A Talking Shop host is always near the door to welcome people in. Meeting every single person who walks through the door, every single day.

The host:

  • keeps the door open at all times and invites all people to come inside
  • welcomes and meets and greets every visitor
  • explains what we are trying to do.
  • introduces people to the space and other visitors
  • points out what they can find and do inside
  • connects artists with the public and vice versa.
  • gives people permission to enter, to stay, and to join in.
  • explains to them that the space is theirs. It belongs to them. Their taxes pay for it so it is theirs to just be in. To sit. To Think. To talk. To read. To watch.
  • tells young people they can use this space to do their homework, meet their friends, shelter from the rain.
  • tell people they do not have to spend money to be here. They can stay as long as they like. And keep telling them. And tell them to tell their friends that everyone is welcome in this and every Talking Shop

The host invites people to

  • sit down, have a cuppa, meet other visitors and join in a conversation or simply just sit, read, listen, be.
  • discuss the question of the day or any question displayed
  • ask questions
  • to watch, listen, read content inside the shop/ put on some headphones and watch/listen to some work on one of the screens
  • contribute to the ongoing curation of the shop – put up a poster, leave some leaflets about something which is happening in the town or city
  • meet The Talking Shop collaborators and partners and their resources and information
  • write in a visitors book, on the wall, record some audio or video
  • check out and/or contribute to/help create and curate  the rolling programme
  • Help themselves to leaflets and business cards left by freelancers working in the creative and cultural sector
  • take a leaflet, to find out what’s on, to find out about the cultural and creative life of their town/city,
  • read, think, contemplate
  • discuss/debate the question of the day or any question surrounding them on the walls
  • write in the visitor’s book or on the wall
  • ask questions about our democracy, to register to vote, to have a cup of tea, to collide, connect, collude, create and/or to just be.
  • hire the space of an evening or a Sunday
